See his will, below; also Sarah Cook's response to Interrogatory where she states these are illegitimate children of John and James - file, Mortgage Foreclosure Maidens Mount and Paradise.

      Will of John Cook, September 4, 1797 - Harford County, Maryland

      In the name of God, Amen. I John Cook of Harford County State of Maryland and being in perfect state of mind and memory know that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say-

      My will and meaning is that the ferry and all the land thereunto belonging together with the improvements should be sold immediately to discharge my debts and my Father’s and my Brother James’ as far as they appear to be just and lawful and if their should be any balance left after discharging the debts the same to go into my estate and if there should not be any then in that case as much more of my estate to be sold and discharge the whole of the just debts.

      Further my will and meaning is that my mother, Sarah Cook, should enjoy and hold as essence in her hands and for her use the whole of the residue of my estate during her natural life with this incumberance that is to say that the, the aforesaid Sarah, is to raise to such ages the three children that are now with her namely Milcah [or Millah] and James and Nancy at her own expense and give them schooling if to be had in the neighbourhood as they should be that profess to put to trades by my exrs [executors] or administrators or their guardians then the aforesaid children to be put to good trades and further schooling if necessary.

      Furthermore my will and meaning is that at my Mother’s death that all the remaining part of my estate should be sold and that the three within mentioned children should have fifty pounds apiece which is one hundred fifty pounds then my will and meaning is the remainder of my estate to be divided in the following manner, that is to say the three within mentioned children together with William Wells Junior’s children and Ester Cook’s __children if she should marry and have any should each have two parts to Robert Bodkin’s and Thomas Rogan’s one.

      And otherwise I do make ordain, constitute and appoint my trusty friends Stephen Norton, John Street and Solomon Perkins to settle my earthly affairs and administer on the same and in testimony of which I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disannul all and every other former testament, will, legacy and bequeath’d whatsoever by me in any wise before mentioned will’d and bequeathed ratifying this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this fourth day of Sept. one thousand seven hundred and ninety seven. And furthermore my wish and meaning is that John Wells son of William Wells Junior should have the colt my black mare is now big with and likewise my sister Easter should have my watch.
