Letter to sister-in-law, Mabel Petranek Wirth dated August 21, 1999:
Hello Mabel, So much has happened in the last 10 months that this letter will be quite long. So here goes: last November Josephine fell and broke her hp and leg. Aftr her operation she spent 45 days in a nursing home recuprating. On her return, I tried with the help of a care center, to take care of her. She can't walk so lifting her up several times a day until February, I developed a couple of hernias. So back in the nursing home went Josephine while I had a double hernia operation. I then joined Jo in the nursing home so I could recuperate!

Then in June, I get short of breath and a heart murmur! Back to the operating room I went and had one small bypass and an aortic valve replced. Guess what -- Jo and I in the same nursing home again! So then on July 22 Josephine needed nursing care for some very severe bed sores. That's where she is right now (at $130.00 per day). I am doing just fine with my heart. My leg, where they removed a vein for a short bypass, took a long time to heal but otherwise, I'm fine. (It says here). Jo is gradually healing but her Parkinson's disease is causing her memory to deteriorate. I visit her twice a day and occasionally she responds, but not often. Poor Jo! She also is being fed with a tube in her nose.

Jo is now 80 and am 82. I suppose we have had a full life and a very happy one. One son, Roger, lives nearby and he helps me a lot. Dave works with his wife, Fran, in Texas and Kansas City but we talk often via telephone. Roger and Connie are busy working in Bisbee and other towns nearby so we don't see them too much. They did take me out to eat on my birthday. It's very lonely with my dear Josephine gone at a nursing home. I'm glad I have the dog t keep me company. You must forgive my handwriting - carpal tunnel syndrome). I've also lost a lot of weight as has Jo. None of our clothes fit us. It's a good thing I can buy frozen dinners since I never did learn how to cook!

We still have the motor home but I'll have to sell it to help pay medical bills. Oh well, that's life. Just becaue i don't write often doesn't excuse you all! We love to hear from you.
      Love, Jo & Jerry
PS. Sister Vera is visiting my mom's relations in Czech Republic - went with nehew Gary and wife Carol. Will be back soon.
